IZ KRUGA VOJVODINA and the Office of the United Nations Population Fund in Serbia in cooperation with the Center for Independent Living of Persons with Disabilities Čačak “stepped up for human rights” by organizing educational workshops for persons with disabilities at the Regional Center for Professional Development in Čačak on December 10, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.

People with disabilities are informed about sexual and reproductive health and rights, empowered to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health and motivated to advocate for accessible, available, acceptable and good quality sexual and reproductive health protection services.

Motivating women and men with disabilities to advocate for the improvement of sexual and reproductive rights is important because, although the legislative and strategic framework of the Republic of Serbia regarding sexual and reproductive rights is satisfactory, the situation on the ground is full of challenges and men and women with different types of disabilities often they experience violations of their sexual and reproductive rights and encounter numerous obstacles in accessing protection services against gender-based violence. Information on gender-based violence and the sexual and reproductive rights of persons with disabilities is scarce and unavailable in accessible formats, and persons with disabilities regularly face discrimination in protection systems.

Many institutions and protection services are inaccessible, there are widespread prejudices about partnership, sexuality and parenting of people with disabilities. Women and men with disabilities deserve to live in a society that protects their sexual and reproductive health, and that is why today, on International Human Rights Day, we remind the state that it is committed to providing us with these basic human rights.

International Human Rights Day is celebrated around the world on December 10 under the slogan For a faster recovery – Step up for human rights. The observance of International Human Rights Day on December 10 was established in 1948 at the United Nations General Assembly. The formal establishment of Human Rights Day in order to draw attention to the previously signed Universal Declaration of Human Rights was voted by the General Assembly on December 4, 1950 at its 317th plenary meeting by promulgating Resolution 423(V).
