Ivana Zelic and Miladinka Mijatovic, the representative of …IZ KRUGA – VOJVODINA, held a workshop Recognizing Violence against Women with Disabilities in the youth center OPENS on November 3, 2021.
Organization …IZ KRUGA – VOJVODINA has established cooperation with the Novi Sad Volunteer Service which is aiming to promote the positive values of volunteer work in the local community. In partnership with the Volunteer Service volunteers have been hired to promote the services of the SOS service to women with and without disabilities exposed to domestic and partner violence.
The workshop leaders introduced the volunteers to the work of the Organization and talked about the types of disabilities and models of disability, stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination and violence against women with disabilities, principles of working with women survivors of violence and recommendations for talking to women with disabilities (physical, sensory and intellectual).
The films Support to Women with Disabilities Survivors of Violence and Accessibility of Protection Services from Violence for Women with Disabilities were shown during the workshop to present specific forms of violence against women with disabilities and accessibility of support services to the partakers.
The volunteers gained new knowledge about the position of women with disabilities and the obstacles they face on the way out of the situation of violence. They emphasized the importance of guidelines for dealing with women with disabilities, which they believe will be functional in volunteer work.
After the workshop, the volunteers will distribute leaflets with the contact details of the SOS service by inserting them into the mailboxes of the citizens of Novi Sad in different parts of the city. This way, they will increase the awareness of women with disabilities who have survived violence about available support services.
